Alecia and Tom Eberhardt have a theory: there are only three types of successful diners. They should know, since they’ve been capturing the mall on camera for the past four years. There are “food diners,” where you go for the meal, there are diners where you go for the place, and then there are “people diners.” People diners are most of what you’ll find in the couple’s forthcoming book, Diner Porna spinoff of their blog of the same name.

“Tom (my husband and the photographer on the project) started photographing diners at the end of 2012,” Alecia explained over email. “He was living in New Jersey (hallowed land of diners!) at the time and was looking fora way to document these institutions that had been such a big part of his life.”

Tom decided to share his work on Tumblr, eventually recruiting Alecia to write the captions and vignettes that went with each entry. Slowly, their work gained traction, and with that came recommendations. So many recommendations, in fact, that they could no longer afford to explore them as a solely personal project.

Through Kickstarter they raised the money for a Diner Porn road trip that started in upstate New York, where they live, down the East Coast to New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, the DC metro area, Richmond, Raleigh, Charleston, Savannah, west to Atlanta, Mobile, and New Orleans, and then through the midwest to Jackson, Memphis, St Louis, andChicago before finally looping back home and hitting Kalamazoo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and NYC. These stops served as inspiration for Diner Porn the book, currently on its way to the hands of eager Kickstarter backers from 2014.

“It had never been in the plan from the beginning,” Alecia said on their decision to create a book. “But it seemed like a perfectly natural next step.”

While the book is rooted in the duo’s blog, it takes things a little further. “Every ‘chapter’—meaning each diner entry—is a combination of a photo essay and a written account of the diner,” Alecia explained. There are 24 stops in total, each accompanied by everything from a few short paragraphs to full journalistic reports.

While Diner Porn has been a project years in the making, they’re certainly not finished. Diner Porn in its current state is considered self published, but the couple has an agent and some pretty big dreams.

“We have hopes of selling the concept to a publisher for an expanded edition, where we can do the west coast/southwest and get a larger printing in bookstores,” Alecia says. “Maybe one day we'll do a diner in every state. How cool would that be?”

As for their diner breakfast orders? Well, that’s the easy part.“Tom usually goes huevos rancheros, if they have it,” Alecia says. “I used to be a egg & cheese bagel sandwich girl, but I've come around to liking eggsBenedict with regular bacon instead of Canadian, for the crunch. And always, always, always coffee.”
