Chip and Joanna Gaines, the couple from the hit HGTV show Fixer Upper, are known for taking ugly AF homes in central Texas and making them beautiful. So when Chip and Joanna Gaines bought Elite Cafe in Waco, Texas, in May 2016, after it had been closed for several months due to poor sales, there was a lot of speculation about what kind of magic they'd work on this historic space, too. Well, it turns out that the Gaines are fixing up Elite Cafe to be a breakfast restaurant. As Chip told Southern Living, "The Elite Café is going to be a breakfast joint," expected to open in 2017.
Running a breakfast restaurant might seem like a stretch for two reality TV stars who specialize in home renovations. But the Gaines have been dabbling in food service since 2014, when the duo opened Silos Baking Co., which is also located in Waco and serves up homemade chocolate cake, biscuits, pies, and even Syrian doughnuts, based on a recipe from her grandfather.
The bakery was inspired by Joanna's love of baking, according to their website, so it should come as little surprise that the new breakfast restaurant was influenced by Chip's love of breakfast. As he explained to Southern Living, he's kind of an expert when it comes to the first meal of the day: "I’ve always been a breakfast connoisseur."
The duo might not be able to agree on what makes the best breakfast. "I always do a heavy, bigger breakfast, but Jo is the exact opposite," explained Chip to Southern Living, but they're both on board with this newest breakfast venture. "She was kind enough to come with me on this one, and we are going to do up a breakfast joint here in town.”
No word yet on the menu, but the space is almost sure to be meticulously designed in the Fixer Upper couple's signature modern rustic style. And since Fixer Upper draws more than 3.8 million viewers per episode, there's sure to be a long wait for brunch.
