Veterans Day is observed on November 11, and it's a chance for Americans to come together to thank the brave women and men who have fought—and are still fighting—for the safety and security of this country. That's why many restaurants offer free food for veterans on Veterans Day as their way of extending gratitude for service. And veterans and active duty military personnel who have a soft spot for bacon, pancakes, and doughnuts are in luck, because there are plenty of restaurants where they can get a free breakfast on Veterans Day. Plus, quite a few of these Veterans Day freebies last all day, so you can get breakfast anytime.

For most of these Veterans Day promotions, you'll need to bring along your military ID, some other proof of military service, or wear your uniform. And even though the meal is free, it's always a good idea to tip your server.

If you're ready for breakfast, here are eight places where veterans can find a free breakfast on Veterans Day.

Bob Evans

Veterans and active duty military personnel will be able to enjoy a free breakfast at Bob Evans at any time of day on November 11, with a choice of entrees including a stack of hotcakes or the country biscuit breakfast with country gravy and a choice of hash browns, grits, or home fries. If you miss the meal on Veterans Day, you can also take advantage of a 10 percent discount to all veterans and active duty military from November 12 through December 31.

Denny's

Denny's is offering a complimentary Build Your Own Grand Slam—a choice of four breakfast items like pancakes, bacon, and eggs—to active, inactive and retired military personnel between 5 a.m. and noon on Veterans Day.

Friendly's

At Friendly's, veterans and active military personnel can get a free Big-Two-Do. It's a monster breakfast, with a choice of two slices of Brioche French toast, two buttermilk pancakes or two slices of toast; two strips of crispy applewood-smoked bacon or two sausage links, and served with two made-to-order eggs.

IHOP

IHOP is offering a free stack of Red, White, and Blue pancakes to veterans and active military personnel this Veterans Day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The buttermilk pancakes come with glazed strawberries, blueberry compote, and whipped topping, which are what gives the dish its patriotic colors.

Krispy Kreme

All veterans and active duty military personnel can get one of any variety of doughnut and a small coffee for free at Krispy Kreme on Veterans Day. This is one of the few promotions where a military ID is not required; simply identify yourself as a veteran or active duty military personnel.

LaMar's Donuts and Coffee

Veterans and active military personnel can get a free doughnut and coffee at the regional doughnut chain LaMar's Donuts and Coffee (locations in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska) on November 11.

Starbucks

On Veterans Day, Starbucks honors active duty service members, reservists, veterans, and military spouses with a free tall brewed coffee.

Village Inn

Veterans can visit Village Inn, a chain of over 200 restaurants spread across the Midwest, the Rocky Mountains, and Florida, for a free INN-credible V.I.B. breakfast platter. You'll get a choice of eggs, a side of breakfast meat, and a choice of French toast, a waffle, pancakes, or a crêpe.
