Next spring, dressing for brunch may include matching your outfit to your eggs, coffee, and avocado toast. Each year, color authority Pantone predicts the shades you’ll be seeing everywhere next season– in your clothes, on walls, upholstery, table settings, and anywhere else manmade color is found. This year, after considering the colors designers selected for their spring collections at New York Fashion Week, Pantone Color Institute announced their Fashion Color Report for Spring 2017. In order, the top ten colors are: Niagara, Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Island Paradise, Dogwood, Greenery, Pink Yarrow, Kale, and Hazelnut. The list includes multiple shades of blue, pastels, and quite a few colors that beg the question—has Pantone been following Extra Crispy’s Insta?

The NYFW designers who included Primrose Yellow in their spring collections may have been thinking of actual primrose plants, but to the experienced bruncher, and those of us who spend more time at diners than at botanical gardens, the warm yellow shade might as well be called “Mimosas and Scrambled Eggs.”

Pantone Color Institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman describes the reddish-orange Flame as “gregarious, vivacious and definitely a party color.” This is an apt description, especially if that party includes Bloody Marys. In fact, the number four shade for spring might actually look best in a glass with celery garnish.

Greenery may be the color most familiar to breakfast enthusiasts. Green with a hint of yellow, Eiseman relates the color to Japanese forest bathing, telling WWD “anything that you can create that gives you that feeling of really being immersed in nature is a good thing.”  Sure, it looks a bit like grass, but Greenery also perfectly calls to mind the more appetizing bright green of avocado through an Instagram filter.

By including Kale and Hazelnut as the ninth and tenth shades for spring 2017, Pantone is basically giving up on the illusion that they weren’t hungry when working up this color report. Eiseman refers to the kale as “oxygenating” (i.e. healthy) and hazelnut as a transitional color that, much like a latte, is appropriate all year round. It's a safe bet that, based on these predictions, brunch will be in style through at least next summer.
