One of the biggest problem with store-bought air fresheners is the smell dissipates after a few minutes. (Might we add that they’re loaded with gross chemicals.) Get a little nostalgic by simmering a holiday potpourri on the stove like your parents and grandparents did in the good old days before Febreeze. If you’re throwing a holiday party, and if by some mere miracle you have a free burner on the stovetop, give your guests a warm welcome. To make Christmas potpourri you only need five simple ingredients. Throw in orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves so your stove top potpourri looks as great as it smells. You can mix it up by substituting cider with cranberry juice, or by throwing some fresh ginger into the pot. Sliced apples work just fine, too. You could even add a few sprigs of rosemary.

This DIY potpourri is highly customizable. Replicate whichever scents warm your heart and soul, and your guests will never want to leave.

Holiday Potpourri

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

  2. Reduce to a simmer.

  3. When the liquid has reduced by half, add 2 cups water and 1 cup apple cider.

  4. Keep the pot going for as long as you’d like—just continue adding water and cider when the mixture reduces, so it doesn’t burn.
