The start of winter is basically an open invitation to getting sick. It doesn't help that you’ve probably been trading early bedtimes for late-night holiday parties and going to way too many happy hours. When you feel that first sign of a sore throat, bust out a zingy cold-busting shot to knock those germs out of your system for good.

These shots start with a hefty dose of vitamin A (carrot juice) and vitamin C (orange juice), with lots of anti-inflammatory cinnamon, anise to stop your nose from running, and antibacterial, throat-soothing honey. Whisk in spicy minced ginger and ground cayenne to clear out your sinuses, and a splash of alkalizing apple cider vinegar. Toss the mixture into a shot glass—knock back a few of these every day until you’re feeling better.

  1. Combine carrot juice, orange juice, honey, anise seeds, and cinnamon stick in a sauce pan over medium-high; cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 10 minutes. Pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a 2 cup liquid measuring cup; discard solids. Cover and chill 45 minutes.

  2. Whisk in vinegar, ginger, and cayenne until combined. Pour mixture into 4 shot glasses.
